Future of Union Admin (and other Flash based apps)

Postby toby » Tue 14 Jul 2015 11:20

Clearly, Flash is important in the Union Platform environment.
Reactor, the Client Framework for Flash seems to be the more prominent
(all the documentation for Client Frameworks is there, as opposed to the stubs for Orbiter).

Union Admin is written in Flash.

But according to this article,
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... ks-hacking
and this one
http://www.computerworld.com/article/29 ... o-day.html
and lots of others ...

Firefox now blocks Flash entirely (well pops up an annoying warning which you have to click through to allow)
and that 800 lb Gorilla, Facebook, is calling for its end, too.
Youtube no longer delivers videos in Flash, whenever possible.

I use Orbiter and Javascript, so my app will be ok ... but I also use Union Admin (a lot),
so have concern there, and I'm sure all the developers who have used Reactor / Flash
should be concerned about this. And Firefox is my browser of choice.

So guys, this seems like a pretty big deal ....
what's the situation over here?

flash is still well maintained in the desktop browser space and through AIR for mobile, and adobe shows good signs of continuing to develop it for years to come. as you point out, with the exception of union admin, union's javascript support is as full-featured as its actionscript support, so even if flash were to suddenly disappear, we'd rewrite union admin in javascript and carry on.
